Computing

A-Level

At Suffolk One, Computing is a technical subject which has a large practical element. This course is aimed at students who are interested in learning more about Computing and who may need to use computers as a part of their chosen career. The course examines the techniques used to design and write programs and makes students aware of the main principles of systems analysis.

Entry requirements

Students will be expected to have achieved a grade B GCSE in both Maths and a Science with a grade C or above in English. If ICT has been taken as a GCSE then a grade C would be expected.

What will I study

The course is ideal for any who are seriously considering a career working with computers. The emphasis is on Computer Science; students will learn to become effective designers and implementers of computing solutions, learning to program in a number of languages including Java and Visual Basic.

You can expect to develop:

  • The capacity to think creatively, innovatively, analytically, logically and critically
  • An understanding of the organisation of computer systems including software, hardware, data, communication and people
  • Ability to apply skills, knowledge and understanding to computing, including programming in a range of contexts to solve problems
  • Skills in project and time management
  • The capacity to see relationships between different aspects of the subject, and perceive their field of study in a broader perspective
  • An understanding of the consequences of using computers, including social, legal, ethical and other issues
  • An awareness of emerging technologies and an appreciation of their potential impact on society 

Java

  • Carry out the development of a computer application for a real client

 

Which subjects complement this

The skills required for Computing and Music Technology are very similar and this is a common combination. Computing and Maths or Physics complement each other well and can be taken together. Computing also works well with Business Studies or elements of the Business, Administration and Finance Diploma.

Progression

A - level Computing prepares you for careers in electronics design, many varieties of programming, systems analysis and design, network analysis and management, computer auditing and forensic computing.
