Through taking ‘A’ level Dance you step into the world of dance and gain knowledge and understanding of the dancer in action and the skills involved in performance. Through analysis, interpretation and evaluation of dances you will gain an appreciation and understanding of their historical and cultural context.
Students should budget for the costs of attending live performances in order to gain maximum benefit from this course.

Where Dance has been studied at GCSE then a grade B is expected; however if this is not the case then considerable experience of practical ballet/or contemporary dance is required. Grade C GCSE English Language is also required. All prospective students will be expected to attend an audition.
In the first year (AS) you’ll have two main areas of study: ‘Understanding Dance’ and ‘Choreography and Performance’. Both are designed to get you dancing solo and with others, as well as studying the professionals and seeing how dance can have great meaning and expression. Your coursework will include physical, interpretative and performance skills.
The second year (A2) takes you up a step with two more study topics. In the first ‘Dance Appreciation’ – you’ll be able to study a dance genre in detail. There’ll be a set work to study, chosen from three professional dance pieces. You’ll then develop your choreography skills even further, creating a dance for others to perform. This area of study called ‘Group Choreography and Solo Performance’ includes your very own performance in the dance genre you have studied.
Students applying for this course should be aware that it involves practical and written elements and therefore students should have previous experience in areas such as ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, street, latin, ballroom or modern dance.
The emphasis will be on working creatively to choreograph students’ own work whilst experiencing the exciting world of dance.
There are many different degree courses available if you want to continue your development in Dance. You can progress into a variety of different careers e.g. Performing, teaching, choreography, community dance, administration, journalism, dance movement therapy.
