The English Language is often described as a living thing, constantly evolving and changing.
Language is central to our lives and reflects the attitudes and values of groups in society. During this course you will explore the impact of language in today’s modern world.
Entry requirements
In order to undertake this course you will need a grade C or above in GCSE English Language.
What will I study
English Language at A-Level is a fascinating subject for those genuinely interested in studying how language works. You will explore the nature of language, and its contribution to our lives, as well as acquiring the concepts and frameworks for successful linguistic study.
You will:
- Write a range of different pieces of creative writing for AS coursework.
- Develop a linguistic terminology which will be useful in a range of other subjects.
- Explore language usage in different situations and social contexts through gender, power and technology at AS Level.
- Study the differences between speech and writing.
- Investigate language use in an area of your choice for your A2 coursework.
Study child language acquisition and language change at A2 level.
Which subjects complement this
You will find that English Language complements a range of subjects. It works well with Law, History, Psychology, and Media Studies as Humanities subjects. However, the skills of investigation and analysis are also transferrable to Modern Languages and the Sciences. The mixture of creative writing combined with the technical accuracy of analysis of language means that the skills you will learn in this subject can be developed in various curriculum areas.
Assessment
• 60% written examination – 1 exam at AS and 1 exam at A2
• 40% coursework – coursework pieces of 2500-3500 words at AS and the same at A2.
Progression
You will develop the ability to evaluate the power and impact of language. This is an invaluable skill that is highly regarded by employers and universities. English Language opens the door to a wide range of career opportunities, including publishing, journalism, media, law, personnel, management and teaching.
