First Diploma in Performing Arts (Level 2)
Level 2 BTEC Diploma – One Year Course
This course is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in the field of Performing Arts. Students will have the opportunity to develop skills across the following disciplines: Dance, Drama and Music.
This qualification is vocational and work –related enabling you to gain the specific knowledge and understanding relevant to the sector and will prepare you for a level 3 National Diploma in Performing Arts or you can progress straight into employment in a wide variety of prospective careers
Entry requirements
At least two GCSEs at grade D or above; including GCSE English Language and Drama (or similar). You will also need to commit to an additional 10 hours of study per week. In exceptional cases, students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate their performing skills by attending an audition.
What will I study
The course is made up of three core units: ‘Working in the Performing Arts Industry’, ‘Professional Development in the Performing Arts Industry’ and ‘Performing Arts Production Process’. Through external visits, visiting speakers, professional contacts, work experience and within workshops at Suffolk One you will gain an insight into what is involved in the Performing Arts Industry. In addition to this you will study seven specialist units including Acting Skills and Techniques, Urban Dance, Exploring Musical improvisation, Mask Making, Design for Performance, Performing Dance and Performing Scripted Plays’.
Which subjects complement this
The Functional Skills of Maths, ICT and English will be taught as an integral part of the First Diploma.
Assessment
This course is designed as a practical course and most of your marks are awarded based on the work you do in workshops, and during performances. There are written elements to the course that provide evidence of your work: these may include a workshop diary, reviews, evaluations and personal portfolios.
Progression
This course provides an excellent opportunity to give students an insight into their chosen career and a springboard to the next step. Whether they intend to stay in education to go onto the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts at Suffolk One, or go straight into employment, this course will provide the basics to help them achieve.
