Teaching Spaces
The teaching areas at Suffolk One are designed as flexible work spaces which enable innovative teaching strategies and provide a vibrant and dynamic learning environment in which independent study is developed. All classrooms are equipped to a very high standard with wireless internet connection and sophisticated audio-visual learning facilities.
Resource Centres
There are five learning zones each encompassing a learning resource centre on the ground floor for informal teaching and independent study; plus a state of the art centralised learning resource centre that floats within the central atrium and is a dramatic feature of the building. Together, these hold thousands of texts, journals, online and audio-visual resources for use by staff and students. Each area also provides staff support for students to fully capitalise on the resources available.
Sports
A 6 court sports hall and fitness suite with access intended for the local community. Plus an outdoor Multi Use Games Area.
Laboratories and Workshops
A motor vehicle workshop and science laboratories.
Theatre Space
A double height drama and performance space with folding screens to facilitate teaching and productions.
ICT
The building is designed to be wireless-enabled throughout. Numerous PCs and Apple Macs are available for independent study throughout the centre and students have access to laptops in classrooms.
Café One
This is the place to meet and eat. An open plan, modern and sociable space serving delicious meals, snacks and drinks throughout the day.
Breakout Spaces
At Suffolk One we recognise that the best learning takes place when students work together in a relaxed and comfortable manner. We are fortunate to have a blurring of the boundaries between social and academic space and this encourages students to learn in a collaborative manner. Informal breakout areas are spread throughout the college and provide students with access to fixed work stations and laptops for such independent and collaborative study.
Overview of accommodation and specialist resources (Arts & Sports)
The Faculty of Arts and Sports benefits from exceptional facilities which include a Performing Arts centre; a superb sports hall, fitness suite and outdoor multi use games area; spacious, naturally lit Art & Design studios; industry standard Audio Visual Equipment and highly qualified teaching staff and technicians in all areas; the Faculty has its own Learning Zone area from which equipment and resources can be accessed and loaned to support independent study
Visual Arts:
• Large naturally lit open plan studios to accommodate up to 100 students. The studios are divided into five zones dedicated to: Painting, Graphic Design, Photography, Textiles and 3D design
• Facilities are available for printmaking; including photo-silk screen, heat transfer and etching. There are potters wheels, a large kiln and a damp store
• Textiles students have access to sewing machines, overlockers, embellishers and a large fabric printing table
• 60 iMacs and MacBooks with Adobe Creative Suite and Colour Laser Printing
Media:
• An outstanding selection of Digital SLR Cameras, High Definition Video Cameras and Film SLRs
• 30 iMacs with Final Cut digital video editing
• A multi-purpose Photo studio with professional lighting set up and green screen
• A fully equipped darkroom
Performing Arts
• A purpose built double height performance studio with a sprung dance floor, computerised lighting rig, sound and video projection, retractable seating for 200+
• Two further performance studios and a music technology computer suite with 40 iMacs and MacBooks running Logic/Sibelius
• A fully equipped recording studio with two digital desks and DJ Production Tools
• Four music practice rooms with a wide range of acoustic and electric instruments and percussion
Sport
• An impressive Sports Hall: with markings for two Basketball courts, six Badminton courts, 5 a side court, Netball court and Cricket Nets
• Floodlit Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) with full sized Football and Hockey pitch markings
• Fitness suite with Cross Trainers, Treadmills, Rowing Machines, Steppers, Bicycles, Ergometers, Weight Machines and Loose Hand Weights
